On Nov. 8th, 2006, the observatory was open to show live the transit of Mercury across the face of the Sun. The transit began at 2 pm and continued on into dusk. Explanations to such events and their historical importance were provided. Some video equipment broke which hampered our ability to do all that we wanted to cover. However it allowed us to start building a scale model of the solar system. The system of the first three terrestial planets was displayed down in the Electrical Engineering hallway. Thank you to the EE dept!
In all about thirty five people showed up.
On Nov. 30th, 2006, Joyce Weliky's classes at Advent Lutheran School came by for a solar observation field trip. Although the weather did not cooperate, the students did enjoy their lecture about the sun, magnetism and its influence on the sun's surface. They were a very bright and eager bunch! Photos |
